Abstract

1354298 Preserving wood with creosote/ polymer mixtures PRBD DE BRUIN 27 April 1971 [27 April 1970 21 Dec 1970] 11535/71 Heading A5E [Also in Divisions C3 and Dl] Wood is impregnated with a creosote and a liquid preparation of monomeric or polymeric methylmethacrylate. The liquid preparation preferably comprises a solution of polymethylmethacrylate in acetone and may also contain pentachlorophenol or copper naphthenate. Preferably the liquid preparation is applied in admixture with the creosote. The wood may be impregnated by a pressure process, an open-tank (thermal) process, or by coating the surface of the wood with the mixture and permitting it to penetrate. The wood may be coated after impregnation with a bituminous or tar substance which may contain pentachlorophenol or copper naphthenate. This coating may be covered with a ¢" cementicious layer which may be reinforced. Alternatively the coating may be covered by an asbestos casement filled with hot bitumen or tar. The creosote may be high temperature creosote, low temperature creosote, medium temperature creosote or may form part of a creosote solution or a creosote-containing wood preservative. The preservative may also contain a mineral oil. The mixture is preferably an emulsion. Timber members already in service may be pre-treated to arrest weathering, by spraying, brushing or injecting a solution of copper naphthenate, pentachlorophenol, pentachlorophenol-zinc naphthenate, tetrachloronaphthalene-pentachlorophenol or tributyl tin oxide. The process improves the hardness and water-repellancy of the wood, in addition to its resistance to weathering and infestation. Seven days after treatment the wood can be painted with an acrylic base paint.
