Abstract
1354076 Aromatic hydrocarbons METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 28 March 1972 [3 April 1971] 14556/72 Heading C5E A mixture of aromatic and non-aromatic hydrocarbons is distilled to separate a fraction enriched in the aromatic compound (or mixture of isomers thereof ) which is present in the largest amount in the mixture, and from which this pure compound is recovered by solvent extraction or extractive distillation, and an overhead or bottoms material or a mixture of both overhead and bottoms materials is catalytically hydrodealkylated to produce a material from which benzene is recovered by distillation. Coke-oven benzene boiling between 70 and 150‹ C. and purified by hydrorefining is distilled to provide a benzene-rich overhead, which is subjected to extractive distillation to produce pure benzene, and a bottoms fraction, comprising toluene, xylenes and a small amount of benzene, which is passed to a dealkylation stage and the dealkylate product is distilled to produce pure benzene. A stream of pyrolytic gasoline is distilled to remove volatile non-aromatics and the residue is separated in a second column to provide an overhead rich in benzene which is hydrogenated prior to purification by extractive distillation and a bottoms which is hydrodealkylated to produce benzene which is recovered by distillation. A hydroformate is distilled at F1 to remove a volatile non-aromatic stream 2, a side stream 1 containing benzene and toluene, and a bottoms stream 3, which is distilled at F2 to provide a xylene fraction 4 which is purified by extractive distillation. The bottoms 5 are combined with the benzenetoluene stream 1 and hydrodealkylated to produce a benzene-containing stream which is then distilled to provide a stream 10 of pure benzene. The hydrodealkylation can be carried out at 500-800‹ C. and 30 to 80 atmospheres using a catalyst such as nickel, nickel oxide, or cobalt oxide + molybdenum oxide on alumina.
