Abstract

Machine guns.-A buffer for the action comprises a member adapted to slide longitudinally in a casing fitted with transversely-sliding spherical cushioned members, normally entering sockets on the longitudinally sliding member, but adapted to be forced therefrom when this member slides in the casing. As applied to a small-arm, the casing 12, Fig. 1, is screwed to the rear of the breech-casing 11, and encloses the sliding member 16, against which the breech-bolt 10 is adapted to strike at the end of its rearward movement. In the form illustrated, the member 16 is of square section, as shown in Fig. 3, and is formed with sockets 17 into which balls 18 are adapted to be pressed by springs 20 held in guideways 19 by a screw-cap 21. The depth of the sockets 17 is preferably about two-fifths of the diameter of the balls 18. When the bolt 10 strikes the member 16, this moves rearwardly and forces the balls out of their sockets against the action of the springs 20.
