Abstract

1353587 Casting thermoplastic material H J ELLIOTT 19 April 1971 [10 April 1970] 17156/70 Heading B5A In a method of casting a thermoplastic material, e.g. sulphur, bitumen, polystyrene or rosin, the surface to which the material is applied is wetted by an aqueous liquid and the excess liquid is allowed to drain off. In the first embodiment, Fig. 1, a mould in which is located article reinforcement 38 and lifting hooks 39, has a base 29 imprinted with a mesh like pattern. Layers 31 of wire mesh are superimposed on the side walls 30. Water supply means 32, 33 establish a film of water over the base and walls to a level controlled by a drain pipe 34. The material to be cast is poured into the mould and as soon as a sufficiently thick skin is formed at the casting surface the material is submerged in cold water which is circulated through the mould until the casting shrinks away from the mould walls and the article is then removed. In another embodiment, the mould comprises an endless perforated conveyer with a wire mesh facing. Water sprays cool the cast strip which is removed by a scraper blade. The conveyer belt may comprise a cellulose or rubber layer to which a fabric is bonded. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, two moulds are mounted on a trunnion so as to be movable between a moulding position and a discharge position. Each mould comprises a base member 93 with a terra-cotta insert 94 in a rubber liner 95 and has drain holes 97.
