Abstract
1353543 Automatic control of polarization BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 7 June 1971 [9 June 1970] 19163/71 Heading G3R [Also in Division G1] #/4 plates 1, 3 are disposed either side of a Pockels or Kerr electro-optic cell 2 and with their axis at 45 degrees to those of the cell so that light incident on one #/4 plate leaves the other plate with a plane of polarization rotated by an amount controlled by the potential applied to the electrooptic cell. As described, the arrangement is used to nullify variations in the plane of polarization of an incident beam derived from a Faraday effect element 14 controlled by the current in a high voltage conductor 15. An A. C. voltage is passed to a differential amplifier 23 controlling cell 2 and to a phase detector 21. After passing an analyzer 16, the light beam falls on a photo-detector 20 supplying the other input to detector 21. The output of detector 21 is amplified 22, measured 24 and passed to the other input of amplifier 23. When the plane of polarization of the output light beam has a predetermined orientation with respect to analyzer 16, the output of detector 20 will comprise only the second harmonic of the A.C. frequency supplied to cell 2. Detector 21, preferably tuned to the A.C. fundamental, is therefore able to supply a signal indicative of the 'magnitude and sign of the deviation of the output plane of polarization from the predetermined plane, and the measurement 24 is thus a function (linear or square law, depending on whether a Pockels or Kerr cell is used) of the current in conductor 15. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1248752.
