Abstract

1352841 Screw-and-nut mechanisms FERRANTI Ltd 19 April 1971 [11 Feb 1970] 6621/70 Heading F2Q Ball screw-and-nut mechanism comprises a plurality of balls 17 located in a cylindrical cage 19 disposed between a screw member 11 and half-nuts 12, 13, the mechanism having a differential screw action by virtue of the pitch of the screw thread on the screw member 11 being different in sense from the pitch of the screw threads on the nuts 12, 13, and driving coupling means being provided between the cage 19 and the nuts 12, 13. Each ball is retained in a radial bore having a reduced diameter at the end remote from the screw member 11. The nuts 12, 13 are secured together by bolts 27 and are spaced by a plate 26 having a toothed periphery 42. Backlash may be eliminated by relative angular adjustment of the nuts 12, 13 or by relative axial adjustment thereof. A driving shaft 45<SP>1</SP> carries a gear 44<SP>1</SP>, meshing gear 42, and a toothed portion 46 which meshes a gear-wheel 47 integral with the cage 19.
