Abstract
1352832 Testing optical components photoelectrically SIRA INSTITUTE 20 July 1971 [2 Aug 1970] 32229/70 Heading G1A An optical system (or component) 11 is tested by transmitting a test pattern of electromagnetic radiation produced at 10 by a first scanning operation through the system, subjecting the test pattern to a further scanning operation before or after - e.g. at 16 - the pattern is transmitted by the system, deriving from the double-scanned pattern an electrical signal 23, and deriving from this signal the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of the system. The test pattern may be produced by a scanning operation such as the movement of a radial grating along a narrow slit, and the test pattern generator 10 may be of the form shown in Fig. 1 of Specification 970369. The second scan is produced by reciprocating an inclined mirror 16 or glass plate, or by oscillating laterally a lens. The analyzing device 19, which has a slit at its input, includes a plurality of photo-electric sensors and produces the signal 23, having components at the two scanning frequencies, representing the MTF of the system. The spatial frequency of the pattern produced by the initial scan at 10 may be varied incrementally or continuously.
