Abstract

1352599 Making bolts TOKAI COLD FORMING CO Ltd 24 Aug 1971 39723/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A bolt for fastening the big end portion of a connecting rod of an internal combustion engine comprises a threaded portion 1 positioned between the bolt head 8 and a threaded fastening portion 3 at one end of the bolt and adapted to fit snugly within a bolt hole of the big end, the threaded portion 1, having a greater pitch and a smaller effective cross-sectional area than the other threaded portion 3. The bolt is made by cold heading a chromium-molybdenum steel blank, cold rolling the threaded portions 1, 3 and passing the threaded portion 1 through an ironing die to produce the desired external diameter. The threaded portion 1 has an outside diameter of 8 mm., a root diameter of 6À15 mm. and a pitch of 2 mm. The threaded portion 3, which is reversed relative to the other screw thread 1, has an outside diameter of 8 mm. a root diameter of 6À65 mm. and a pitch of 1 mm. The unthreaded shank portions 5, 7 have a diameter of 7À3 mm.
