Rings.-In order to remove internal stresses and ensure a piston-ring acting on the cylinder wall with uniform pressure, the ring, cut or uncut, is first heated in a furnace, then bent to the selected curve (an involute of a cycloid) tetween dies, and then removed from the dies and subjected to reheating and regulated cooling. The rings A' are heated in a furnace b provided with a slot c at the bottom for their passage, and are removed one by one into position over a shaped mandrel p having a conical top, by a reciprocating slide d actuated by a cam m through roller l and links j, i, e. The ring is fixed on to the mandrel by a platen q drawn down by rods r, provided with nuts r<1> upon which press springs r<2> acted upon by a crosspiece s provided with a rcller s' which engages a rotary cam v. The platen q is then returned 'by springs u, and the ring removed from the mandrel by a stripper x connected by rods x<1> to a crosspiece y provided with a wiper which engages a rotary cam w. In the case of unsplit rings, the ring may be notched before being heated, when the contraction on the mandrel p may be made to cause the ring to fracture at the nick, thus dispensing with a separate operation for splitting the ring. After being shaped, the ring is moved forward by the next ring into a receptacle o. The ring is finally reheated and may be cooled by passing on a conveyer through a series of cooling- chambers.
