Abstract
1352070 Carbon plate KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 19 April 1971 [17 April 1970] 9919/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] A plate adapted to be used as the anode of a cell in the electrolysis of brine is formed by preparing a mixture of 1-80 parts by weight of carbon fibre and 99 to 20 parts by weight of a carbonaceous binder, which fibre and binder are graphitizable only with difficulty i.e. on graphitization, at 2400‹ C. the fibre and the carbonized binder have a specific gravity of from 1À4 to 2À0, a crystallographic plane interval (8002) of 3À38 to 3À70 Š as measured by X-ray diffraction and a crystallographic orientation of 0 to 95%, shaping the mixture so prepared into a plate and carbonizing at a temp. of from 1000‹ to 3000‹ C. The binder may be selected from phenol resin, furan resin, epoxy resin, polyimide resin, polyimidazole resin, vinylidene chloride, vinylidene fluoride, polymethylvinylketone, and polyamide resin or a mixture of any of these resins with at least one of pitch, oxidized pitch, coke, and carbon black, all graphitizable with difficulty. Before use the fibre used may be treated so as to modify its surface, e.g. by being oxidized or being coated with isotropic carbon by pyrolytic decomposition.
