Abstract

1352042 Boring earth and rock INSTITUT GORNOGO DELA SIBIRSKOGO OTDELENIA AKADEMII NAUK SSSR 15 April 1971 9454/71 Heading E1F The direction of movement of a reversible pneumatic percussive device having a housing 1 and a reciprocable striker 2 defining front and rear working chambers 5 and 6, depends on the angular position of a rotatable sleeve valve 15 having ports 16, 17, relative to ports 11, 12 in a fixed bushing 8, the valve being urged forward by a spring 19 and having a member 21 co-operating with a peripheral zigzag recess 20 which is so contoured (see Fig. 4) that, on interruption and resumption of the air supply to the device, the valve 15 rotates unidirectionally so as to alternate the register of ports 12, 17 with the register of ports 11, 16 thereby altering the device from a forward to a reverse adjustment. The zig-zag walls of the recess 20, Fig. 4, have their apices 26, 27 offset to ensure that the member 21 moves in one direction only. As shown (forward adjustment) air delivered along a line 10 enters a chamber 6 and drives the striker forward to deliver an impact. On recoil, air from the chamber 6 passes through ports 7 into a chamber 5 and drives the striker rearwards until the ports 7 register with ports 12, 17 whereupon the chamber 5 is exhausted via ports 13, 14. Air pressure in the chamber 6 then drives the striker forward again and the sequence is repeated. When the air supply is stopped, the valve member 15 is pressed forward by the spring 19 and simultaneously rotates through an angle α 1 , Fig. 4, owing to the engagement of the member 21 in the recess 20, which is a zig-zag. On resumption of the air supply the valve member is forced back against the spring 19 and rotates a further angle α 2 , Fig. 4, to bring the ports 11, 16 into register, and the ports 12, 17 out of register. Air from the supply passes through apertures 7 and drives the striker back to deliver an impact against the flange 9. On recoil, air in the chamber 6 drives the striker forward until the ports 7 register with the ports 11, 16 whereupon air enters the chamber 5 to drive the striker towards the flange 9 again and the sequence is repeated.
