Abstract

1351946 Machine tool control SIEMENS AG 19 April 1971 [11 April 1970] 9981/71 Addition to 1216000 Heading B3B [Also in Division G3] A lathe 1 machines a workpiece 3 with a cutting tool 7 to produce a final profile 4 corresponding to a pattern 5 as sensed by a coupled feeler 9. The tool 7 is mounted on a slide 8 which is co-ordinately driven by motors 13, 14 energized from drives 11, 12 controlled by a device 15 responsive to the output of a synchro coupled to the feeler 9, to which a correcting value is added dependent on the feeler deflection. The torque on the lathe spindle is monitored and fed on line 17 to an adaptive controller 16 operating as disclosed in Specification 1,216,000, which modifies the operation of device 15 to reduce or increase the cutting depth so as to maintain the torque between limits. The profile 6 of the pattern 5 is traversed a number of times until the workpiece is machined to profile 4. To avoid traversing completed portions of the workpiece the longitudinal travel of the lathe is divided into a number of zones defined by dogs which trip a switching device attached to the tool slide 8. The zones, during a machining cycle, that the feeler lifts away from the pattern are determined by a logic array and stored in a counter. The cycle is repeated over the zones stored in the counter and the remaining zones in which the senser lifts, are stored in a second counter while the first counter is reset in readiness for a further cycle. When the workpiece profile 4 corresponds to that of the pattern 5 the adaptive control is disconnected and a finishing cut performed under sole control of the feeler 9.
