Abstract

135,179. Knobloch, A., and Mandl, O. Feb. 13, 1918, [Convention date]. Tunnelling by boring.-In boring or tunnelling in earth, rock, coal, &c., concentric circular channels are cut in the working face and the rings between the channels are then severed by means of radially moving tools; a floor channel is formed simultaneously with the formation of the concentric channels. In the machine shown, a cylinder a and double-walled cylindrical segments b, c carry bits f and are rotated by a shaft h to form concentric channels, cutters g and a centre drill simultaneously forming a central hole, while, in sagging strata, rear knives q trim the tunnel walls. Cutters u, connected by flexible members t to actuating-rods v, are then advanced radially to sever the rings between the channels, after which a sleeve k, with arms n carrying percussive tools o, is reciprocated on the shaft h to break up the rings, the resulting blocks being moved rearward by a worm y and carried away by a conveyer. The tools o and the centre drill have water ducts. The carriage supporting the machine is mounted on an adjustable front wheel running on the tunnel floor and two rear wheels running on rack rails, a pawl preventing rearward movement; upper wheels engage a rail carried by the roof of the tunnel lining, side passages accommodate the crew and apertures arc provided to facilitate timbering. The front wheel of the car and the front end of the conveyer may be lifted by means of a screw. A boring drum supported by the carriage cuts out a channel in the floor of the tunnel, the core formed by the drum being cut transversely by a cutter disk tool at desired intervals and the resulting fragments being removed by means of a scoop, rocker, and tip bucket; the whole of this channelling apparatus is supported by a frame which may be lifted when necessary. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that thrust rollers are provided between the cylinder a and the carriage and that a percussive tool may be provided to cut the core removed from the floor channel. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
