Abstract

1351555 Polyurethane foams DOW CHEMICAL CO 5 Sept 1972 41201/72 Heading C3R Polyurethane foams are prepared from a reaction mixture comprising an organic polyisocyanate, a polyol containing aromatic hydroxyl groups and an aldehyde or a compound capable of releasing formaldehyde. The polyols are most suitably those of the formula wherein R is hydrogen or C 1 -C 3 alkyl, X is hydrogen, hydroxyl, chlorine, bromine or C 1 -C 12 alkyl, n is 1 or 2 and m has an average value of 0À1 to 4, those of the formula wherein R is a C 1 -C 8 alkylidene radical, -S-, -S-S-, -SO-, -SO 2 -, -CO- and each X is independently hydrogen, C 1 -C 12 alkyl, chlorine or bromine or diphenyl ether resins which are the reaction products of a chloromethylated diphenyl ether and a phenol. The aldehyde or compound capable of releasing formaldehyde may be trioxane, paraformaldehyde, hexamethylene tetramine, tris- (hydroxymethyl) nitromethane, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, glyoxal, furfural, benzaldehyde and hydroxybenzaldehyde. The foams have improved resistance to thermal degradation.
