Abstract

1351279 Automatic control of course FLUGGER€TEWERK BODENSEE GmbH 1 July 1958 21123/58 Heading G3R Steering of an air-to-air missile to collide with a source of light or infrared energy, e.g. jet aircraft tailpipes, is effected photo-electrically. A gyroscope in the missile is precessed automatically by the photo-electric system to maintain the axis of rotation directed towards the target; the inclination of the gyro axis to the missile longitudinal axis is detected and the resultant signal adjusts the missile control fins to turn the missile into alignment with the gyro and hence towards the target. In the gyroscope precession sytem a mirror, mounted on the rotor and inclined at a small angle thereto, reflects light (or heat) rays from the target to a photo-cell. The cell output energizes a coil of which the field interacts with a permanent magnet mounted on the gyroscope to cause it to precess until the axis is directed towards the target. The mirror rotating with the rotor produces an image which traces a circular path round the photo-sensitive device. The inner diameter of the path is such that a small displacement of the image path due to an error between the gyro axis and line of sight causes the image circle to touch the photo-sensitive device to produce the correcting signal.
