Abstract
1350957 Cutting apparatus GERBER GARMENT TECHNOLOGY Inc 5 Oct 1971 [5 Aug 1971] 46241/71 Heading B4B A method for use in cutting a layup 14 of sheet material, e.g. fabric, by means of a reciprocable cutting blade 18 comprises advancing the blade along a line 48 while reciprocating it and maintaining it at a height relative to the layup wherein it extends entirely through the layup during at least a portion of each stroke and when a sharp corner 54 is reached by the cutting edge 20 of the blade, rotating the blade, while continuing its reciprocation and maintaining said height, in such direction as to move the cutting edge away from the corner along a second line 52. The cutting blade 18 is mounted on carriages 16, 34 movable in X-Y coordinates by means of electric motors 38, 40 under the control of a computor 20. As shown in Figs. 4A-4C, the blade is rotated about a vertical axis substantially coincident with the rear edge 22 of the blade so that as shown in Fig. 4C, when the blade is rotated, the material is displaced as indicated by the wrinkles 58. Upon completion of the cut 52 the blade is rotated back to the line 48 and the carriage then moved to advance the blade further along the line 48, Fig. 4E (not shown). When it is desired to cut a straight line instead of curved as shown in Figs. 4A-4C, the carriage 34 is moved in addition to the rotational movement of the blade, Figs. 5A-5H (not shown). In a modification, the blade may be rotated about an axis 64, Fig. 6C thereby displacing the material on both sides of the blade.
