Abstract

1350905 Cutting keys D COCKROFT 27 July 1971 [14 May 1970] 23310/70 Heading B3K A machine for cutting keys comp rises identical means 15, 16, Fig. 3, for clamping a pattern and a key blank respectively, a stylus held in a block 8, Fig. 1, and a cutter 7, the stylus and cutter being movable by the same distance in both the lontidudinal and transverse directions relative to the pattern and blank. The machine comprises a framework 1, Fig. 1, a carriage 2 slidable within vertical guides 3 on the frame, the guides being horizontally movable on rods 4. Cutter 7 is rotated by an electric motor 6, and the horizontal movement of guides 3 is provided by an electric motor 10 which drives a crank-wheel 11, connected to a rod 14 fastened to carriage 2 by a rod 13. Vertical movement of carriage 2 is provided by motor 10 which drives a cam-shaft 30 through a chain-and-sprocket drive 29-32, the cam (34), Fig. 2 (not shown), on the shaft engaging the underside of a top plate 9 of the carriage. Each of the clamping means 15, 16 comprises a fixed jaw 18 and a sliding jaw 17, Fig. 5, jaw 17 being actuated by a head 22 having a rubber pad 56, axially movable in a bearing block by a rotary cam 25 which coacts with a cam 53, the cams 25 being carried by a shaft 55 rotated by cam-shaft 30, Fig. 1, by a chain-and-sprocket drive 50, 32, 59, and bevel gears 28, 27. The effective jaw distance of each pair of jaws 17, 18, can be varied by a lock-nut and screwed shaft 54, 24, Fig. 5. The pattern and key blank are carried on a feed mechanism (40), (41), Fig. 4 (not shown), which may be coin freed. The pattern is positioned by a friction wheel 37, Fig. 3, carried on a pivoted spring- loaded lever 35, and rotated from cam-shaft 30 by a sprocket drive 38, 39. In operation, with carriage 2 at its upper position, clamps 15, 16 are open. Electric motors 6, 10 are started and a pattern and blank are clamped at 15 and 16 respectively. Cams 25 actuate jaw 17 to clamp the pattern and blank carriage 2 with guides 3 are moved to their forward positions, stylus block 8 contacts lever 35, and friction wheel 37 moves out of contact with the pattern. Carriage 2 is lowered until the stylus in block 8 engages the pattern and takes the weight of carriage 2, and cam 34 moves away from the carriage. Carriage 2 is then pulled along the length of the pattern by crank-wheel 11 and rod 13 and the key blank is machined. At the end of the cutting stroke cam 34 lifts carriage 2 to thus move the stylus and cutter from the pattern and finished key.
