Abstract
1350584 Silicic acid dispersion MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd 20 Aug 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 44466/70 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C3 and D1-D2] A silicic acid dispersion comprises an aqueous solution of silicic acid (as defined) and a watersoluble organic polymer having a molecular weight greater than 4400, the silicic acid content as SiO 2 being at least 0À2% by weight. The polymer may be a vinyl-substituted heterocyclic N-containing polymer or copolymer of molecular weight 35,000 to 50,000, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone or poly-2-vinyl-pyridene N-oxide or a polyalkylene glycol, e.g. a polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 10,000 to 25,000. In general the polymer should have a molecular weight between 5,000 and 200,000. The weight ratio of silicic acid to polymer may be from 150 : 1 to 2 : 1, and the pH of the dispersion should be less than 7. The stability of the silicic acid solution may be increased by contact with an anion-exchange resin in the hydroxyl form. The polymer may be added to the silicic acid as a finely divided solid or as a solution in a watermiscible solvent such as a lower alkanol (ethanol, methanol), a lower ketone (acetone) or an ether (tetrahydrofuran, ethoxyethanol). Addition of a silica aquasol having 1-65% by weight of SiO 2 produces a siliceous binding agent, for example in the production of a ceramic shell mould for metal casting.
