Abstract

1349689 Electrostatic separators FMC CORP 25 May 1971 [9 July 1970] 16812/71 Heading B2J Fine particulate material moving in a path with a horizontal component is separated by applying an electric field across said path between electrodes spaced above and below said path and extending transversely to said path. As shown, particulate material M such as mixed mineral ores to be separated is fed by a vibratory feeder trough and hopper combination 22 which may be heated into one end of the electrostatic separator 20 through which it is propelled by a vibratory feeder 46. The separator comprises top and bottom electrode plates 42, 40 which have matching electrode grids 60 (62) painted or sprayed on their upper and lower surfaces respectively in a herring- bone pattern. The electrodes are connected to an AC supply with a higher potential being supplied to the central portions 60a, b (62a, b) than to the outer portions 60c, (62c). Particles which are influenced by the electric field tend to move laterally across the plate 40, past deflector members 80 and barrier structures 90 to pass through apertures 97 into a collecting trough 26. Those particles which pass through deflector members 80 but do not reach the barrier structures 90 are guided at 103 into middling containers 28 for re-cycling. Material which is not influenced is discharged by chute 54 onto a conveyor 24. The matching electrode grids on plates. 42, 40 are preferably staggered longitudinally (Fig. 8, not shown). Several electrodes may be stacked on top of each other. Different frequencies in the audio range may be supplied depending on the response characteristics of the material to be separated.. Different frequencies may be supplied to different longitudinal portions of the electrode grid structure to separate different materials sequentially. The electrode plates may be tilted sideways and/or be rifled to assist the separation.
