1349654 Hair curling and straightening devices M L SERRAT 20 March 1971 7528/71 Heading A4V [Also in Division D1] A device for use in curling or straightening natural and artificial fibres, e.g. hair, comprises, in combination, a tubular body 1, Fig. 2, having on its outer surface at least one helicoidal rib 2 which runs continuously or intermittently from one end of body 1 to the other and whose function is to channel or direct the fibres so that they acquire a helicoidally-wound position when wound around body 1, means 6 at the body ends for retaining the helicoidally-wound position of the fibres, and tongs (14), Fig. 7, (not shown), for application to body 1 to immobilize fibres wound therearound, the tongs having limbs (15) which are non-parallel so as to follow the helicoidal inter-rib surface of body 1. Body 1 may be frusto-conical, frusto-pyranidal, cylindrical or prismatic, and may be made of plastics material with apertures (4), Figs. 5 and 10, (not shown), through the sidewall. The ends of body 1 may be both open, one open and the other permanently closed, or both closed but with one being operable. The retaining means may comprise integral end flanges (13), Figs. 12 and 13, (not shown), with projecting teeth, or there may be at each end of body 1 an H-shaped member formed by parts 6 joined by a crosspiece 7 bearing a stud 8 pressfitting into a hole in an integral end wall or removable lid of body 1. The body 1 may be heated by an electrically heated rod inserted inside the body, the shape of the rod complementing the internal shape of the body.
