Abstract
1349443 Recording television pictures ELLANIN INVESTMENTS Ltd 19 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 58546/72 Heading H4F The production of a comb effect when double interlaced scan video pictures are recorded on motion picture film, which is due to the lateral displacement of a moving object (vertical edge) against a contrasting background during the time interval between an odd-field scan and the interlaced even-field scan which together from a frame on the motion picture film, is prevented by comparing during each even-field scan each line thereof with the preceding even-field line A (comparator 28) and with an adjacent odd-field line D (comparator 40), and by comparing the two odd-field lines B and D adjacent the evenfield line C (comparator 34). If the comparisons show identity between the pair of even-field lines and between the pair of odd-field lines, but a difference between the compared odd and even field lines then selector 44 is actuated to substitute adjacent odd-field information, e.g. a 50-50 interpolation (produced by resistors 45, 47 and clamping amplifiers 49, 51) of adjacent odd-field lines for the even-field line. For all other results of the comparisons the even-field lines are transmitted unchanged. During the odd-field scans all the lines are transmitted unchanged by actuating selector 52 to transmit the output from compensating delay 50 instead of from selector 44. In a basic embodiment each even-field line is compared with an adjacent odd-field line and if there is any difference therebetween an interpolation of the two adjacent odd-field lines or just one of the adjacent odd-field lines is substituted for the even-field line. This basic embodiment does not distinguish between moving vertical interfaces and a horizontal interface. In the recording of a colour video-signal the above processing has to be done separately in the luminance and chroma channels as the phase of the chroma signal between adjacent line of the same fields requires phase inversion before comparison.
