Abstract

1349314 Mattresses; sleeping bags C J GAISER 19 April 1972 [9 June 1971] 18129/72 Headings A4G and A4M A mattress or sleeping bag incorporating the mattress, comprises a jacket 3 of flexible, airtight material, e.g. nylon, polyethylene film or rubberised fabric containing a core comprised of crossing tiers of spaced ribs 4, 6 sandwiched between sheets 7, 8 all of resilient, flexible, open-cell cellular material of various stated kinds, the ribs and sheets being adhesively bonded to each other, and a tube 9 provided with a sealing cap 13 communicating the spaces in the core with the outside. With the cap removed, the mattress may be flattened to expel air from the spaces between and within the cellular ribs and sheets and then rolled up, preferably around mandrel 16 in the form of a plastics tube 16 capped at 17 for holding e.g. a fishing rod, the cap 13 being replaced to keep the mattress flat. A heat-reflective barrier sheet, e.g. metal foil, 14, may be bonded between the bottom jacket layer and the core. The sleeping bag is formed by two overlapping covers 23 slide fastenable on their edges at 24 to provide spaces for a person, having shoulder flaps 28 and neck opening 27, and bonded to the mattress lower edge at 22. The covers are formed of a moisture resistant envelope containing a flexible insulating pad 31 of material similar to the mattress core and having an inner sheet of heat reflective material. An auxiliary valve may be incorporated in the mattress to permit pumping air into it.
