1349071 Measuring displacement electrically PILKINGTON P E Ltd 16 May 1972 [6 April 1971] 8914/71 Heading GIN Head-up display apparatus comprises a combiner plate 1 mounted for movement in a predetermined direction; a support 2 mounted for arcuate movement by parallel links 3, 4 pivoted at 5, 6 to the support 2 and at 7, 8 to a base support 9 whereby the angle of inclination of the combiner plate is maintained substantially constant relative to the axis of normal view of a pilot; a rack 22 extending parallel to the predetermined direction and a pinion 23 engaging the rack and carried by a shaft 24 leading to a potentiometer 25 which emits an electrical signal indicative of the position of the pinion along the rack and therefore of movement of the combiner plate along the predetermined direction. Stops 11, 12 are engaged by limit switches 14, 13 respectively when the combiner plate is rearmost and foremost position respectively. Motor (18) Fig.2, (not shown), drives the plate through a gear-box (19), clutch (20), gear quadrant 16, wheel 17 and shaft 15 connected to links 4. A clutch over-ride switch 21 provides for manual positioning of the combiner plate.
