Abstract
1349064 Blowing glassware in a glass ribbon machine OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 1 Jan 1971 [2 Jan 1970 16 Jan 1970] 26/71 Heading C1M In the formation of hollow glass articles blown from a ribbon of glass at spaced intervals through orifices in a plate conveyer so that the articles are suspended from the ribbon by a moil portion; gas under pressure is introduced into the article to establish an upwardly and outwardly directed flow of gas through the moil portion and at the same time severing the articles from the ribbon, thereby expelling loose particles from the interior of the articles. A ribbon 13 of molten glass is fed by rollers 12 over the orificed plates of a conveyer chain 14, the resultant parisons being formed below the chain 14 and blown by blow heads 16 on conveyer turret 15 into paste blow moulds 17 travelling on conveyer turret 18 below chain 14 to form articles 19, such as glass bulbs or bottles, which are connected to ribbon 13 by a moil portion 23. The chain 14 then continues with the blown articles 19 below a pressurizer mechanism 20 with heads 21 on a conveyer chain travelling with chain 14, each head 21 comprising a nozzle 22 movable into and out of operative position inside the article 19. At the same time as air is blown into the article 19 through nozzle 22, the orificed plate of chain 14 is struck by an anvil (85, Fig. 2, not shown) or by one or more vibratory shoes 80, 81 to crack off the article at the orifice 28. The crack-off device is claimed in Specification 1,349,066. Pressurizer mechanism 20 includes spaced apart sprockets 40, 41 driven to synchronize with chain 14, with teeth engaging pivot pins 44 on castings 45, interconnecting the pins 44 to form the chain, the pins 44 having rollers 46 to engage guide channels 47 on the lower run. Each head 21 comprises a cylinder 48 telescoping in a central cylinder of casting 45 and urged upwardly by a spring 49, the cylinder 48 carrying a shoe 50, with passageway 52, which engages the forward plate 53 of a wind-box 54, the plate 53 sloping downwardly to move shoe 50 into sliding contact with the underside slot 55 of wind-box 54. Cylinder 45a, rigidly connected to casting 45, has vertical slots 56 accommodating stub shafts 57 on a hollow adapter 58 carrying the nozzle 22 and sliding within cylinder 45a. Movement of nozzle 22 into and out of operative position is effected by rollers 60 on shafts 57 engaging cam tracks 59, with a central spring 68 pressing the nozzle 22 downwardly. A latching device 64 holds the nozzle upwardly in the upper run of the conveyer. Nozzle 22 has an end wall (27) and one or more rows of apertures 25 directed upwardly and outwardly in the side wall of the nozzle. The nozzle may be as claimed in Specification 1,349,065. Transfer mechanism 31.-A series of tongs 29, on a chain conveyer 30 round sprockets 90, remove the articles 19 and transfer them to an endless conveyer 34 which may form part of a burn-off machine 35 and including chucks to hold the upright article. Each pair of tongs 29 is mounted on a bracket 102 having bushings 103, 104 slidable in a vertical rod 93, the rods 93 being interconnected by links 91 and 92 and being precisely positioned by rollers 94, 95 and 94a, 95a top and bottom engaging tracks 96, 99 and 96a, 99a on the machine frame 97 and side rollers 100 on links 91 and rollers 105 on bushing 103 engaging tracks 101 and 106 respectively. Track 106 is a cam track providing for the raising and lowering of bracket 102 and tongs 29. A slide 109 on bracket 102 carries a block 113 on which U-shaped tongs 29 and retainer fingers 114 are mounted and transverse movement of slide 109 is effected by roller 108 on cam track 108a. Block 113 is on the end of a shaft 111 passing through bosses 109a and 110 and scissor action fingers 114 are linked by pin 115 to arms 116 connected at 117 to block 110. Movement of slide 109 by cam 108a moves shaft 111 until stop 111a acts to position the tongs 29 about the moil 23 with fingers 114 open below, and further movement of slide 109, after the article 19 has settled on to the tongs 29 by gravity, moves boss 110 to operate the arms 116 and close fingers 114 about the moil and prevent swinging movement of the article on the tongs 29. Reverse movement is effected by cam 108a with spring 111b retaining roller 108 against the cam. Treatment of interior.-The gas used to expel loose particles may be used to cool, coat or otherwise treat the interior of the article 19. Air will normally be used, but nitrogen or vapours of inorganic coating constituents such as sulphur, tin and titanium are suggested. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,301,335.
