1348788 Joining structural members; balustrades H HEIDRICH 23 April 1971 [25 April 1970] 11126/71 Headings E1B and E1K Structural members 2 (Fig. 3) each in the form of a tubular metal strut, bar or column, are joined together by spigot-and-socket connections to form a structure suitable for a balcony, each such tubular member 2 being of octagonal section, two opposed sides of which are provided with internal ribs of outwardly directed channel form and with outwardly directed longitudinal slots which are undercut to provide channels for the reception of the heads of bolts used to fasten supports 10a (Fig. 11), on which are secured covering bars 10c or cladding panels (not shown), or/and for the reception of plastic decorative strips 2a'. A kit of parts for a balcony structure comprises column members 2 together with base members 1 (Fig. 1) which are cast in the form shown to provide a spigot 1a adapted to enter an end of a member 2, a flange 1b and a foot 1c having a barb 1d, and cap members 3 (Fig. 4) which are also cast, to provide a spigot 3a similar to the spigot 1a, and an apertured plate 3b for the attachment of a hand rail 4 (Fig. 5) by means of bolts 4a. In assembly, the base members 1 are secured to a concrete slab by inserting the feet 1c in a hole in the slab and cementing them in place, after which the tubular members 2 and cap members 3 are push fitted in place. Screws, adhesive or welding are employed after assembly to secure the members permanently together. Where the handrail is to be bent at right angles, a connecting member 5 (Fig. 6) comprising a block 5a with fingers 5b adapted to enter the channels in the underside of the handrail is provided. There may also be included in the kit a connecting bar (Fig. 8, not shown) having a spigot at either end for engagement in the upper ends of the members 2. Base members modified such that the spigot and foot member extend in directions at right angles to each other may also be provided (Fig. 9, not shown) for construction of a reinforced structure (Fig. 12, not shown).
