1348665 Basic azo dyes SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 10 June 1971 [12 June 1970 (2) 24 July 1970 10 Sept 1970 18 Nov 1970 17 Dec 1970 29 Dec 1970] 19948/71 Heading C4P New basic monoazo dyes of formula wherein the group represents an unsubstituted or a 4- and/or 5- substituted thiazole ring, or an unsubstituted or a 6-substituted benzothiazole ring, B represents an indolyl group of the formula wherein R 1 is alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, aralkyl, aryl, alkaryl wherein the alkyl group has 1 or 2 carbon atoms, methoxy, ethoxy, halogen, cyano or nitro, and R 2 is hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxyalkyl, acetoxyalkyl, haloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, cyanoalkyl or carbamoylalkyl; or an anilino group represented by the formula wherein R 3 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, methoxy, ethoxy, halogen, cyano or nitro, R 4 and R 5 are each independently alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxyalkyl, acetoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, cyanoalkyl, phenoxy-substituted hydroxyalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, the benzene ring of the aralkyl or aryl group optionally being substituted by one or more of the groups represented by R 3 , and n is 1 or 2; when B represents an indolyl group R is H, halogen, CH 3 or C 1-4 alkoxy, and when B is an anilino group R is C 1-4 alkoxy and Z is an anion are prepared by quaternating the dyes of the above formula, but wherein the ring N atom is unsubstituted, with an appropriate epoxide in the presence of a Broensted acid. The dyes are used to colour acid-modified polyacrylonitrile, polyamide and polyester fibres in blue or red shades.
