Abstract

1348009 Toy flying machines C A BRIGGS 19 July 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 36321/71 Heading A6S A pylon G, Fig. 1, supports a boom and pivot arm J journalled about a horizontal axis P for up-and-down motion and also journalled for rotation about a vertical rod V, one end of the pivot arm mounting an electric motor C driving a propeller D for rotation of the arm, upon the other end of which a linkage L may carry a model flying machine M. As shown, the boom and pivot arm J constitute a single structure, 'but alternatively the boom may be a structure separate from the pivot arm, carrying the propeller D at its outer end. The electric motor C may be adjusted about the axis of the arm J, Fig. 2 (not shown), so that the propeller D is directed horizontally, or tilted up or down. A balance weight E is movable along the pivot arm J. The journal support for the pivot arm J, Fig. 5, rotates about the vertical rod V on ball bearings Z, and a single bearing Z 2 . Conducting wires T connect a rheostat RH, Fig. 1, controlling the electric motor C, through the brushes shown, Fig. 5, to a battery. Thumb screws Y are adjustable to vary the friction of the arm J about its pivot axis P, and a brake F is adjusted to vary the friction opposing the rotation of the arm J about the vertical rod V. These adjustments, together with appropriate operation of the motor control rheostat RH, angular adjustment of the motor C, and positional adjustment of the counterweight E, enable the device to simulate the landing, takeoff and flying characateristics of various types of flying machines, e.g. VTOL, helicopters, trainer biplanes, jet airliners, supersonic jets &c.
