Abstract
1347873 Laminates; cutting apparatus H-J DIETZSCH 26 April 1971 [24 April 1970 31 Aug 1970] 11422/71 Headings B5A and B5N [Also in Division F2] A method of manufacturing a panel for use in a load-bearing structure which panel is formed of a multiplicity of short tube sections extending parallel to each other substantially at right angles to the plane of the panel and being connected together, the method including the steps of simultaneously forming a number of tubes 1, 2, 3, 4 each wound from at least one thin substantially flat strip 1<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP>; separating equal lengths 11 of these tubes 1<SP>11</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP>; combining these sections into a block 5 with the axis of all the tube sections extending parallel to one another and then dividing the blocks 5 into two or more panels 30 by cuts made at right angles to the axes of the tube sections. The strips may be of paper, unwoven fabrics or woven fabrics, foils of metal, cellulose derivatives, thermoplastics, thermosetting resins, rubber or organo-fluorine containing polymers or molecularly oriented polymers. Each of the tubes may be formed by wrapping the constituent strip or strips in helical fashion with the edges overlapping and a compressive force may be inserted upon each strip while it is being wound on its mandrel in such a manner as to wind the strip about and move it along the same. A variety of methods of exerting this compressive force are specified (see Division F2) and the force may be such that a permanent shaping of the strip results. The tubes are preferably formed with their axes in a common plane and the block is formed by moving the tube section in layers transversely to this plane. A material constituting a precursor of a hardenable bonding material may be applied to the tubes prior to the connection of their end regions to already separated tube sections, e.g. by spraying and in one embodiment the mandrel in which the tube is wound is provided with an internal duct for supplying bonding material to the inner surface of the tube to be wound. The blocks may be cut into panels by means of saw blades 31 or electrically heated wires. The panels 30 may be inserted between facing sheets.
