Abstract

1347244 Making boxes MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 19 April 1971 [3 April 1970] 15881/70 Heading B5D [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A preformed hollow article has laminated walls comprised of inner and outer layers 10, 11 and at least one intermediate layer 12 formed of a single sheet which is corrugated to provide cavities. The layers may be of paper and the cavities may be filled with foam material, e.g. polyurethane foam. The layers are formed by winding strip material helically on a mandrel, the joints between edges of the strips of adjacent layers being staggered. The intermediate layer may be corrugated such that the corrugations in the article are helical or axial. In one embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) a web (22) is fed around roll (27) and has adhesive (or foam) applied by applicator (28). A further strip (23) is corrugated by fluted rolls (25, 26) and is brought into contact with the adhesive side of web (22). The combined web (22, 23) is fed on to a rotating mandrel (18) and a further web (17) with adhesive applied by applicator (30) is fed around the mandrel on the outside of the corrugated web (23). The tube can be cylindrical or frusto-conical and may be of a variety of cross-sections (Figs. 8, 9a, 9b, 9c, not shown). The formed tube may have an end plate applied to form a container (Figs. 10b, 11, 13, not shown) or used to form a carton by partial slitting at the corners when of rectangular crosssection (Fig. 14, not shown) or can be used for partitioning a box (Fig. 12, not shown).
