Abstract

1347116 Automatic torque control LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 26804/71 Heading G3R The torque of a braked winch is measured and automatically regulated to a predetermined value by actuating a winch motor in response to torque variations. In Fig. 1, a rope mooring a ship to a quay is wound on the drum 8 of a ships winch driven through gearing 3 by a motor 1 which is normally held in a fixed position by a disc brake 4 engaging shoes 9 supported relative to the ship at 10. A signal corresponding to the torque applied to support 10 by the mooring rope is produced by a hydraulic, quartz or magnetic transducer 11 and compared with a signal representing desired torque so that errors exceeding a desired value cause operation of a transistor circuit to release brake 5 and actuate motor 1 to reduce the error. The drive for motor 1 is derived by way of a servo unit from the desired torque signal, and actuation continues until the motor speed reaches zero. After a time delay, the brake is re-applied and the motor switched off. Thus the torque is again monitored by sensor 11.
