1347055 Grinding NORTON CO 23 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 34697/71 Heading B3D A grinder for cleaning castings C, &c., comprises a workpiece holder 90 movable relative to a tool member T, e.g. an abrasive wheel or belt, on a carriage 16 in turn mounted for movement towards and away from and axially of the tool member T, the holder 90 being rotatable on the carriage 16 about a first axis parallel to the tool member axis and a second axis perpendicular to the first with means being provided for moving the carriage 16 and holder 90 automatically sequentially. The holder 90 includes an interchangeable table 84, Fig. 5, with a pin 94 for locating the casting C, clamps 96 being operable by means of a shaft 98 driven by fluid pressure means 104 to lock the casting C in position. A housing 22, rotatably supporting the table 84, includes a stub shaft 24 journalled in an arm 16a of the carriage 16, Fig. 4, a cylindrical member 60 attached to the opposite side of the housing 22 being journalled in a second arm 16b. For rotating the housing 22 about the first axis, a pinion (32), Fig. 8 (not shown), on the shaft 24 is engaged by a rack (34), reciprocable by means of a fluid pressure motor 30, while rotation of the holder 90 about the second axis is effected by a further fluid pressure motor 120, acting through a coupling 124, fluid pressure operated clutch 62 and shaft 66 to rotate a work support shaft 78, Fig. 5, through gears 72, 74. For locking the housing 22 about the first axis, a pin (46) is fluid pressure engageable in a hole (26a) in an arm 26 splined to the shaft 24, while the clutch 62 is operable to lock the shaft 66 relative to the member 60, thus locating the housing 22 about the second axis. A further fluid pressure cylinder 172 is operable to reciprocate the carriage 16 on a supporting rail 14, governed by limit switches LS7, LS8, bars 38, 148 connecting the carriage 16 to a fixed frame 12 being universally journalled at their ends. For movement transversely of the tool member axis, the frame 16 is pivotable on the shaft 14 by hydraulic cylinder means 160, the bars 38, 148 and arms 16a, 16b, along with a frame member 142 and a fixed frame extension 150, defining a trapezoidal linkage, while a hand wheel 156 allows adjustment of the movement. With the casting C supported on the holder 90, a series of grinding operations may be carried out automatically under the control of limit switches and a programmed control means CM comprising conventional stepping switches, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown).
