Abstract

1347030 Steering command indicator SAABSCANTA AB 11 May 1971 [11 May 1970] 14265/71 Heading B7W An indicator for a vehicle to display steering commands for two manoeuvre directions comprises means for displaying a trifurcate symbol whose shape, Figs. 3a-3e, 4a-4e (not shown), is indicative of the commands, the symbol comprising three straight line branches rotatable about the same centre or adjacent centres and control means responsive to a first signal for controlling equal and opposite angular displacement of first and second branches, and responsive to a second signal for controlling angular displacement of the third branch. Thus pointers 14, Fig. 9, indicate by their inclination the magnitude of climb or dive required for an aircraft to attain a given altitude, and rotation of pointer 15 indicates the angle of turn required. Roll and pitch are indicated by the inclination and vertical position of pointer 22, and altitude by markers 26. Alternatively, Fig. 7, the steering command symbol can be generated on a CRT 29a and presented in head-up display. The dashes 33 constituting the symbol may be made to move along the rows towards or away from the centre to command increased or decreased velocity respectively. In one mode of operation, Fig. 10 (not shown), the neutral axes of the display symbol are fixed with respect to the aircraft, and heading and altitude indicated on scales (38), (39) fixed with respect to the horizon. In a further mode, Fig. 11 (not shown), the horizontal axis of the symbol is maintained parallel to a generated horizon line (41).
