Abstract

1346951 Coated glass fibres for reinforcing rubber PPG INDUSTRIES INC 30 Nov 1971 [1 Dec 1970] 55484/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Aqueous combined sizing/coating compositions for treating glass fibres comprise (a) a resorcinol/formaldehyde latex, (b) a styrene/ butadiene/vinyl pyridine terpolymer latex, (c) an amino-functional silane coupling agent, e.g. γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane, (d) ammonia and (e) 0.1-6wt% of an ammonia-soluble carboxyl-containing polymer, e.g. butyl acrylate/styrene/methacrylic acid copolymer, a similar polymer additionally containing 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate units, or a carboxylated polyvinyl acetate containing 10-20% crotonic acid. Some of the exemplified compositions contain additional components selected from SBR latex, formaldehyde, and butyl "cellosolve" (Trade Mark). Glass fibres treated with the above compositions may be used to reinforce natural and synthetic rubbers.
