Abstract

1346896 Seaming non-metallic sheet material COX & WRIGHT Ltd 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 18031/70 Heading B5K [Also in Division D1] In a process of making up garments, the fabrics of which are heat-weldable at least sufficiently to make a temporary seam, prior to machine sewing, garment pieces 6 are assembled on a template 5 and then subjected to a cutting and welding operation in a press in which they are welded to form a temporary seam or seams and initially trimmed to shape in the same press stroke. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, the garment pieces 6, which are to form the back and front of a garment, are cut oversize and assembled to lie one on each side of a flat template 5 of electrically insulating material. Strips 7 hold the pieces 6 firmly in place and are attached to two sides of an opening 10 corresponding to the finished cut size of the garment. The template 5 and the pieces 6 are placed on a spring- loaded cutting and welding die comprising a platen 11 joining two electrode members 3 which lie contiguous with the inner surface of a knife 2 extending around the perimeter of the base 1 of the die. Springs (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), normally urge the members 3 to stand above the knife edge. Insulating studs 4 on spring strips 9 cantilevered to the platen 11 engage in holes 8 in the template 5 to locate the template on the die. The electrodes 3 form two side seams within the opening 10 and, upon depression of the electrodes 3, the knife 2 passes through the opening 10 to cut away portions of the work that are held by the strips 7. The pieces 6 are sewn and simultaneously the temporary seams are trimmed off. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, a pair of sleeves are cut and welded simultaneously using a template 5 having a central gap 10B through which each sleeve 6 is passed and doubled over about one of a pair of arms 5A. The lining up of a pattern on the pieces 6 on the template 5 may be assisted by an optical system. Fig. 7, comprising four mirrors 13 to enable the fabric on one side of the template to be seen alongside an image of the corresponding portion of the fabric on the other side of the template.
