1346877 Measuring thermal expansion G R CLUSENER 25 July 1972 34776/72 Heading G1N The invention relates to apparatus for measuring the linear thermal expansion of a solid using a differential transformer and a thermocouple. As shown, Fig. 1, a test sample T is supported in a quartz tube 126 inside a furnace F and its temperature measured by a thermocouple 156. A differential transformer 52 is axially positioned so that its core 80 is in contact with the sample T through a push rod 84, the transformer body 52 and the core 80 being separately supported by interleaved cantilever springs 42, 44 and 40, 46 respectively. A micrometer 70 enables the position of the transformer body to be zeroized. The force loading on the test sample T is measured by a torsion wire 172, Fig. 7, fixed at its ends 174 and coupled by an arm 170 to the push rod 84, a second arm 176 attached to the torsion wire having a free end which moves over a scale 178 to indicate the applied force.
