Abstract
1346005 Fuel elements COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 19 April 1972 [29 April 1971] 18100/72 Heading G6C A compacted fuel element for a high temperature reactor comprises an annular-shaped fuel member enclosed within a graphite casing constituted by an inner tube and an outer tube, the former being formed of a graphite having a lower coefficient of shrinkage under irradiation than the graphite of the latter. This ensures that the compacted fuel is brought into contact with the two tubes under irradiation. The outer tube is preferably of greater thickness than the inner tube as it is subjected to tensile stress and the strength of graphite is much lower in tension than in compression.
