1345926 Automatic control of position GRAH BETEILIGUNGSGESELLSCHAFT mbH 20 Sept 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 43699/71 Heading G3R A device for controlling the lateral position of a continuous strip includes an infra-red emitter, at least part of the strip lying in the ray path, and a detector including a revolving mirror at the focal point of a parabolic mirror providing a constant amplitude pulse of duration proportional to the strip position. In an embodiment, infrared rays from a transmitter 1, reaching a detector 2, are directed to a receiver 5 e.g. a germanium photodiode via a parabolic reflector 3 and rotating mirror 4. The receiver 5 saturates easily to provide a constant amplitude output pulse of duration proportional to the rays received by the detector i.e. the position of the edge 8 of the strip 7, the pulse being fed to a controller 6. The control may be used in a metal strip finishing and surface treatment plant.
