Abstract
1345675 Preparation of hydroxyacid amides MOBIL OIL CORP 11 Feb 1972 [15 March 1971] 6513/72 Heading C2C Hydroxyacid amides are obtained by heating together a secondary amine and a lactone, which are initially immiscible with one another, with agitation at a temperature from 85‹ to 200‹ C. and in a mole ratio of amine to lactone of at least 1:1, for a period of time until miscibility of the amine and lactone is obtained and amide formation is initiated and no longer than that required for maximum equilibrium conversion to the amide, and cooling the resulting reaction mixture without agitation for a period of time longer than the heating period until completion of the reaction. The cooling step is suitably effected at 20-60‹ C. and the mole ratio of secondary amine to lactone may range from 1:1 to 10:1. The lactone starting material may have the formula where n is an integer from 1 to 5 and R 1 -R 4 are hydrogen or hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, and the amine starting material may have the general formula R 5 R 6 NH, where R 5 and R 6 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxylated hydroxyalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl groups having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms. In examples, the diethanolamide of gamma-hydroxytetradecanoic acid and the N- methyl-ethanolamide of alpha-methyl-gammahydroxyhexadecanoic acid are prepared. The products possess non-ionic detergent properties.
