Abstract

1345591 Vehicle steering DEMAG AG 19 April 1971 [16 April 1970] 27130/71 Heading B7H A heavy vehicle, e.g. a container straddle loader comprises two spaced wheel frames 1 each on a respective longitudinal side of the vehicle and each supported on a group of four road wheels 3. Each wheel 3 is mounted in a vertically pivotable fork 2, the cross-piece 14 of which forms a two-armed lever to one end 6 of which is connected a steering ram 15 and to the other end 6 is connected a tie rod 5 which links with the further forks 2. A valve 10 controls flow of fluid from pump 7 to cylinders 16 which are arranged so that the front wheels steer oppositely to the rear wheels. The fluid lines 17, 18 of each side 12, 13 are interconnected by lines 19 while the tie-rods 5 of each side are connected by lever 23. In a modification, the two sides of the vehicle may have separate hydraulic systems controlled by two valves 10 which are linked. The tie-rods 5 of each side may be connected by a slave control valve instead of lever 23. In a further modification a single valve 10 supplies fluid to one side of the vehicle, while the slave control valve which connects the two sets of tie-rods 5 also controls flow of fluid to the other side of the vehicle. The vehicle may also have an automatic steering system by means of sensors 34 which scan an induction cable in the ground and control the electronic valves 10. Non-steerable wheels may be provided between the front and rear steerable wheels.
