Abstract

1345536 Attenuators G & E BRADLEY Ltd 29 June 1971 [6 July 1970] 32714/70 Heading H3U An attenuator having at least two stages 27- 30; 31-34 having different time constants, mutually connected at terminals 23, 24 and having input terminals 21, 22 and output terminals 25, 26, includes variable capacitors 27, 31 whose values are set by observing, with an oscilloscope, the response of the attenuator to square wave pulses of long duration, repeatedly applied, until the voltage between terminals 25, 26 varies in direct proportion to that between terminals 21, 22, see Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). For use in push-pull circuits, terminal pairs 22, 24; 24, 26 respectively are each interconnected by a resistor shunted by a variable capacitor, the respective resistors having values R 28 , R 32 respectively, the capacitors having greatest values equal to those of 27, 31, respectively. In use the resistance and capacitance of the attenuator output stage may comprise the input capacitance and resistance of an amplifier. The attenuator may be included in an amplifier possibly in a cathode-ray oscilloscope. Formulae interrelating the circuit components, when setting is completed, are given. The stages preferably have different attenuation ratios.
