Abstract

1345331 Photographic materials and processes AGFA-GEVAERT 19 April 1971 [9 April 1970] 16998/70 Heading G2C A method of producing positive coloured images comprises (i) imagewise exposing to visible or ultraviolet light a material comprising a supported or self-supporting layer containing a bis-imidazole of formula wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are carbocyclic or heterocyclic groups and each dotted circle represents 4-delocalized electrons and a reducing compound which on reaction with exposed bisimidazole ceases to be reducing, the compound being (a) an aromatic polyhydroxy compound or an alkoxy-phenol or -naphthol, (b) an aromatic polyamino or hydroxylamino compound or N- alkyl substituted derivative therof or (c) a compound of formula where X is 0, S, -NH-, CH 2 -, -CH = CH- or -CO- and Z 1 and Z 2 complete benzene rings and (ii) transferring by heat the unreacted reducing compound to a separate layer either in the material or of a receiving sheet, the layer containing a substance which reacts with the transferred compound. The invention also relates to a photo-sensitive material comprising a supported or self-supporting layer a bis-imidazole of the formula above and a reducing compound which is either (a) an aromatic polyhydroxy compound or an alkoxy-phenol or -naphthol or (b) an amino-phenol or naphthol in which the amino and hydroxy groups are ortho or para to each other. In the examples, a support is coated with a layer containing a binder, a bi-imidazole and reducing agent and optionally a cyanine dye, imagewise to ultraviolet (or visible light if cyanine dye is present), placed in contact with a receptor sheet coated with a compound which reacts with the reducing agent and heated to produce a coloured image. Specified reducing agent/reactant are (1) 4-methoxy naphthol; 2, 5-(di-t-butyl) hydroquinone, phenothiazine or phenoxazine with silver behenate or mercurie stearate (ii) p-phenylene diamine with pyridinium salts and (iii) p-phenylene diamine with hydroxynaphthamides, benzoylacetamilide or p-nitrophenyl methyl sulphide; these materials require uniform exposure to light after the last transfer to produce a visible image. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1271177.
