Abstract
1345259 Dispensing measured quantities of liquid PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [4 April 1970] 25932/71 Heading B8N Apparatus for dispensing measured quantities of liquid comprises a container 1 for the liquid (which may be a warm liquid amalgam mercurysodium) having an opening or bore forming a liquid-tight seal with a cylindrical rod 10 of tungsten movable axially, said rod having a liquid-conveying recess 12 and being movable by means of a pneumatic ram 17 between a position in which the recess is within the container and a position in which the recess is at least partially outside the container, through a position in which the recess lies wholly within the opening. A member 14 on a spring 13 is of a shape complementary to that of the recess and is arranged to enter the recess, when the rod is appropriately positioned, to displace gas which may be present in the recess. A spring 16 upon downward movement of the rod is displaced by knob 11, and subsequently when the recess is clear of the opening applies an impact to the knob, thus promoting emptying of the recess. A heating coil 6 is provided. An outlet pipe 8 of quartz and including a branch 9 is connected to the container. The container and cover 3 are made of chromium nickel steel. Liquid is introduced via pipe 5 which also serves as an outlet for argon which is introduced into the container via a smaller diameter pipe 4. Preheated argon flows through branch 9 into the outlet pipe.
