1345179 Non-woven fabric CELANESE CORP 19 April 1971 [6 April 1970] 27237/70 Headings D1F and DIR A non-woven material comprises a batt of cross-lapped layers of deregistered crimped continuous filaments stitched together by at least three parallel rows of stitching extending in the batts' longitudinal direction, the angle between the direction of the filaments in each layer and the batt's longitudinal direction ranging from greater than 45‹ to less than 90‹. The batt may weigh from 65 to 875 grams per square metre. The rows of stitching may be spaced less than 60 cm. apart. The, batt may be made from a tow of crimped continuous filaments which has been opened and deregistered by passing it through two pairs of rolls, one roll of each pair being helically grooved, the downstream pair being rotated at a higher peripheral speed than the upstream pair. The grooves in the rolls may be discontinuous. The ungrooved rolls may be coated with a resilient material. Additional pairs of rolls may be, used. The tow may be further opened, e.g. by air jets until its weight is less than 100 grams per square metre. The batt may be stitched by a multi-head knitting machine which may or may not be supplied with thread. The stitching may be at a frequency of from 230 to 1000 stitches per metre. Filaments of polyethylene terephthalate, polyester, cellulose acetate and other organic derivatives of cellulose, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile, and olefinic polymers such as polypropylene may be used.
