Abstract
1345078 Pointing; swaging machines A H TUBERMAN 11 Aug 1971 [26 Aug 1970] 37759/71 Headings B3P and B3H A tube pointing apparatus comprises at least three die shoes 24-26 slidable relative to each other and formed with flat working faces 27 to define a polygonal cross-section working zone with curved working faces 28 which co-operate when the shoes are closed to define a cylindrical recess and an entry zone defined by bevelled faces also of flat and curved form to shape the transition zone between the tube point and the tube. The shoes are moved inwards by a camming action between adjacent shoes as an upper block 15 of the die housing is moved downwards by a ram 67. The tube end is initially shaped to a polygonal section with flat sides 38, Fig. 8, joined by curved corner zones 39. Upon further inward movement of the die shoes the sides 38 buckle inwards, Fig. 9, and the curved corner zones 39 are brought together by the curved working faces 28. There may be three, four, six or eight die shoes co-operating together to form a gap free deforming zone. An hydraulic spring 61, 62 is provided for one of the shoes, e.g. the uppermost shoe, to bias the shoes to the open position when the ram 67 is raised. The other shoes are mounted on coiled springs 51, 58.
