Abstract

1345049 Making cans, angular bending, jointing TOYO SEIKAN KAISHA Ltd 17 June 1971 [22 June 1970 20 May 1971] 28493/71 Headings B3A B3E and B3V [Also in Division B8] A method of making tubular can bodies includes applying continuous tapes 12, 12<SP>1</SP> of a thermoplastic organic polymer to the heated edges of a metal blank, at least one of the tapes being folded around an edge of the blank, forming the resulting blank into a tubular shape, heating the marginal portions of the formed blank, superposing the marginal portions and cooling them while they are pressed together to bond together the coated portions of the blanks. The blank or strip 1 is of low carbon steel, which may have been plated with tin, aluminium, zinc or chromium, or have been treated with phosphoric or chromic acid. Alternatively it may be of aluminium. The edges of the strip are heated by induction heaters 11 to such an extent that only the surfaces of the tapes 12, 12<SP>1</SP> in contact with the metal are melted. The tapes are preferably of nylon, the tape 12 having a thickness of 5-100 microns and the tape 12<SP>1</SP> a thickness of 15-200 microns. The tape 12<SP>1</SP> is progressively formed around an edge of the strip by cooled rollers 14a-14c, and is secured by press rollers 16 and a further induction heating device 17. If required, the tape 12 may be similarly formed. The strip may be sheared to size and it is advanced towards a guide 20 to be formed into a tubular blank around a horn 21. The edges of the tubular blank are heated at a heating station (22), Fig. 11 (not shown), on the horn 21. The adhesive layers should, at this stage, have a maximum moisture content of 1À5% by weight and preferably not more than 0À8%, to prevent the formation of holes by the escape of moisture. The tubular blank is transferred to a bumping station 25, where it is supported on a mandrel 26 and secured by die members 27, 28. A plunger 29 forces the heated edges together against an anvil 32, the plunger and anvil being provided with cooling passages 31, 30 respectively. The seam is formed, with the inner sheared edge and shearing burr (5) embedded in plastics material, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), and so the cut face of the metal is not in contact with the contents of the can. The can body may alternatively be oval or polygonal in cross-section. Many examples of thermoplastic organic polymers are given in the Specification.
