Abstract

1344821 Rock drills MINING DEVELOPMENTS AG 21 Dec 1970 [30 Dec 1969 (2) 8 Jan 1970 2 May 1970] 63238/69 63239/69 913/70 and 21221/70 Heading B3C [Also in Divisions B4 and E1] Rock drilling apparatus comprises a boom 22 pivotally mounted on a carriage 20 which may be self propelled (as shown), a percussion unit 24 for applying axial blows to a drill rod 25 and movable along the boom by a double acting hydraulic ram (44) (Fig. 6, not shown) via ropes and pulleys, and a unit 23, fixed on the boom for applying oscillations to the drill rod. A main drill bit 56 elongate in section perpendicular to the rod axis and provided with tungsten carbide inserts is carried by the rod, and a pilot bit 59, substantially circular in section may also be provided. The pilot bit may be oscillated with the main bit or may be independently rotated whilst the main bit is oscillated. The drill rod is non-circular, e.g. hexagonal, in cross-section and passes through a bore of similarly cross-section in a rotor in the unit 23. The percussion unit 24 or boom may be provided with rollers to facilitate movement of the unit. A motor 35 for driving a hammer of unit 24, e.g. via a cam and spring mechanism, the double acting ram (44), @ram (53) (Fig. 11, not shown) for pivoting the boom, and the unit 23 are included in an hydraulic control circuit. The circuit including means for varying the speed of advance of the drill rod, for varying the frequency of percussion blows, and for varying the speed of oscillation of the rotor of unit 23. The drill rod is hollow and the drills bits are appropriately apertured to permit flow of clearing air. The apparatus may be used to produce holes of substantially rectangular cross-section by limiting the oscillation of the drill bit 56 to 22¢ degrees and may also be used to produce a cylindrical undercut 63 (Fig. 5) by stopping axial impacts on the drill rod and the forward motion of the percussion unit 24 and the drill rod and by increasing the oscillation sufficiently to produce the cylindrical undercut.
