Abstract

1344691 Determining nature of materials electrically NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 18 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 12390/71 Heading G1N The nature of solid materials, e.g. glass reinforced plastic, concrete, plastics, is determined by monitoring the Q and/or resonant frequency of at least one electrical tuned circuit embedded in the material, using an oscillator inductively coupled thereto. The tuned circuit includes a single loop conductor and a chip or parallel plate capacitor, the material acting as the dielectric for the capacitor, and the resistance of the loop varying with strain on the material. A "grid dip" oscillator inductively coupled to the loop may be used to detect changes in Q or frequency. Fatigue cracks, delamination, ingress of moisture, and state of cure of a resin can be detected in this manner.
