Abstract

1344689 Alumina refractory KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORP 25 Oct 1971 [22 Jan 1971] 49366/71 Heading C1A A method of making a dense alumina refractory grain containing at least 95% by weight Al 2 O 3 comprising forming compacts at an equivalent pressure of 60,000 p.s.i. of aluminium trihydrate of the gibbsite crystal structure containing at least 95% Al 2 O 3 on an ignited basis and less than 3% by weight of water removable by drying at 110‹ C. and firing the so formed compacts at a temperature of at least 1650‹ C. The aluminium trihydrate is preferably the undersized product from a Bayer process substantially all of which passes a 65 Tyler mesh screen. The compacted trihydrate may also include other materials, e.g. aluminium stearate, or magnesium stearate.
