Abstract

1344608 Heat exchange elements UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 29 June 1971 [30 June 1970] 10629/73 Divided out of 1343412 Addition to 1343412 Heading F4S A flat vertical surface 1 of a heat transfer member 2 (e.g. a plate) is formed with a plurality of vertically inclined grooves 3, the surface presenting a series of convexly curved crests 3a and concavely curved troughs 3b, and the crests having a minimum radius of curvature which is smaller than that of the troughs. A preferred ratio of the two radii is about 1 : 10. The surface is particularly intended for use as a vapour condensing surface, and in such case the grooves may have an asymmetric profile such as shown in Fig. 2 so that condensate runs preferentially downwards along the grooves. When the grooves are formed in one surface of a plate member (as shown) the obverse surface 4 may be plain, or it can have a profiled form which may be complementary to that of the surface 1.
