Abstract

1344465 Valves JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 11 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39156/70 Heading F2V A fluid pressure regulating valve, which is designed for regulating the pressure of fuel fed to the injector of an I.C. engine fuel injection system, comprises a first sharp edge 15 formed on the valve body 10 and a second sharp edge 24 formed on a movable valuing member 16, the two edges co-operating to define an orifice through which fuel flows to the valve outlet 12. The orifice is supplied with fuel by way of a valve inlet 11 and longitudinal passages 25 which are formed on the periphery of the valving member, such supply acting to move the valving member in opposition to a bias spring 18. The provision of a reduced diameter portion 31 on the valving member and of a sealing diaphragm 29 ensures that the valving member is substantially insensitive to pressure fluctuations in the outlet 12. It is said that the outlet pressure acting on the face of the valving member as exposed by portion 31 generates a net force tending to move the valving member towards the left, as seen in the drawing. Such leftward force is said to be opposed by a substantially equal force generated by the outlet pressure as acting on the diaphragm 29. The force of bias spring 18 is adjustable by a hollow and externally screwthreaded rod 20, the rod maintaining the interior of the valving member in communication with atmosphere or any other suitable source.
